If you are considering holding your own art exhibition, then a little preparation can go to a long, long way. An art exhibition is the pinnacle of months or years of hard work, and it can be a fairly stressful time because the artist has to not only focus on painting or drawing to an extremely high level but also has to project manage the whole event.
Calling on the support of family and friends can help to ease the burden dramatically but if this is not possible, there are ways to become more efficient and successful without losing the creative flow or becoming overly stressed by the process.
1. First of all, if you haven’t already, you should choose the location for your art exhibition and book. Be prepared to book as quickly as possible because galleries are often booked up ahead for years, so although you need to have some good work to show the gallery before they agree to your art exhibition, you will have plenty of time to produce saleable work to go on display.
2. Consider a theme with your paintings (this might make it easier to obtain some local press or radio coverage) especially if the theme relates or benefits the local area or is somewhat obscure and captures interest from a wide variety of sources.
3. Work furiously to produce your best work. Don’t be afraid to take chances and experiment with new styles. This is your opportunity to show you at your creative best. Enjoy the whole process. As an artist you need to become inspired by all of your surroundinges, make use of all of your senses and allow this to come out in your paintings. Your art exhibition is then bound to be a success.
4. You need to advertise your art exhibition. As the date draws nearer, ensure that you advertise locally in as many places as possible; arrange an interview with your local newspaper if possible. Just get the word out there. Sadly, the world of art is a fickle creature and fame does not just happen. These days’ artists need to be sales people and marketers also.
5. Set up a website which has thumbnail images of your paintings. Promote yourself as an artist and you may just get commissions via the website.
6. Most of all enjoy the whole experience. Use your first art exhibition as a learning curve and to gain valuable experience. You may well find that you receive some commissions persuant to the exhibition, and you will be on your way to even greater artistic success.
