There are very few people in this world who do not like cartoons like Tom & Jerry or Mickey Mouse, we simply love them since our childhood days and even people at the age of 70 like watching them. However, do you know why these characters are still loved and admired? Because they were not just drawings, they reflect a story full of emotions, sentiments and human feelings.

Yes, cartoon drawing is not just an art of drawing figures, it is more than that. It is an art which should reach to the general masses like a story; they should feel the character like one of the among themselves. Even when you draw a single illustration, you are narrating something to the people around you. It is all about giving to vent to your thoughts either on a piece of paper or on the the best of its kind Cartooning software; Furthermore, this will be your transition from ordinary cartoonist to out-of-the ordinary cartoonists.

To be into the above said category of the extra-ordinary cartoonist, you need to follow a wide spectrum of learning curves; it does not matter whether you fall into the line of newbie or an oldie. Learn from your day-to-day experience, study the body language of people, the way they speak, a way they walk, everything as it would give you the feel of the character you are drawing.

First of all, decide what you want to draw, a life character or a funny cartoonist character; Furthermore, for what you are drawing, a graphic novel or a comic strip. This, surely, would strengthen your approach towards the character you want to pencil in. Next, try to visualize some of his characteristics on to your mind’s canvas like what is he, what he does, and what are the features that signify his persona. It is always more logical and easier to illustrate someone if you can comprehend his aspirations and motivations.

After that, try to draw the different version of your character like if he is a war hero, he must have scars on his face or any other part of his body but if your character is a movie star, then he must have a glamorous and alluring look. Besides, make sure that your sketch totally resembles with what your character did in the past, and what he is doing right now. Body language of your sketch should also be given importance as it would put more authority and standing to your character.

As said, the entire thing has to be done on your canvas of imagination. But, now it is the time when you are ready to pour all your thoughts on to a real life paper. The technique though varies form cartoonists to cartoonists; the basic dictum and the modus operandi remained the same. Moreover, nail this fact in your brain that whatever you try to draw are all complex 3D figures, and you are actually drawing them on 2D paper. Therefore, while drawing you should analyze the characters in terms of 3D objects like that of boxes and sphere, and not 2D objects like rectangles and squares. Besides, break the compound shape into multiple 3D shapes as it would help you portray the core formation of your character very easily.

Another very useful technique that might prove to be very helpful to you is the negative-space drawing. In negative-space drawing, you actually draw the space around your character rather than the details of your character. However, did you notice something over here, while drawing the negative space you actually end up sketching the basic outline of your character. This approach would somewhat make your task easy because instead of juggling with smaller particulars at the on set, you can finish the outline first and then give attention to the details of your character without many troubles.

Furthermore, add shadows to your drawings as it will provide an extra depth and an added edge to your character. However, drawing an accurate and elaborate shadow could take time; instead you draw some shadowy patches close to the base of your drawing object.

The bottom line is, let your heart overflow and let your imagination fly so-much-so that when anyone sees your sketch, he or she is bound to become the slave of your mind and you art.
