Using pencil drawings for portraits makes it easier to be able to capture an accurate likeness as it is easier to rectify mistakes than if using any other medium. With pencil drawing, soft tones and sensitive shading can be added to the model’s face and the simple effect of using blended strokes around the facial area can make the overall image captivating.

 

Pencil drawing has many different techniques but overall the feeling of movement of pens across paper should be almost instinctive. Using the following tips, artists should be able to understand how to draw a portrait well.

 

1. Take time to look at the model’s face for a while. Notice all of the contours of the bone structure, notice key aspects of their face so that their features remain clear in your minds eye.

 

2. Notice what elements make your model special. Is it their eyes? Their strong cheek bones or maybe even their full and voluptuous lips?

 

3. Think in terms of their character. Are they quite cheeky, mysterious, whimsical? Do they appear stern or warm and welcoming? Capturing these details make it easier to reveal the models true character to paper.

 

4. Make sure you have been adequate sized paper. It can be very difficult doing a pencil drawing on a small sheet of paper.

 

5. Always ensure that your pencils are sharpened, and that you have a variety of different pencils for the project. It is always best to use a variety of techniques when pencil drawing, fine lines for some aspects and shading for the subtle parts of the face to soften.

 

6. Concentrate on the models eyes. Eyes are traditionally known as the windows to the soul and there is a reason for this. Capturing the pure essence of the model can change your drawing from a good painting to an exceptional one.

 

7. Most importantly, have patience. It may not always be possible to have the model present at all times, so a good idea is to take an abundance of photos so that you can continue with your pencil drawing alone.
