Canvas painting is the form of art which has developed and have been perfected after all the other forms of art like water colour painting, acrylic painting etc have been mastered. This form of art deals with the painting that have been created using oil paints and these paints sticks strongly to the texture they are being used on.

Canvases are actually the texture of cloths that were used in sails of boats and other sea vessels. This form of art started taking paces in Venice due to the abundance of the canvases and with time it took over the popularity of water colour paintings.

There are many advantages of painting on canvas which can be described as follows:-

The comparison of painting on canvas is mostly with water color painting and there is wide number of reasons which prove that painting on canvas is far more durable and effective in long term duration than watercolor painting.

Watercolor painting loses its charm, sparkle and luster with time but this is not the case with canvas painting as the pigments that are used gets affixed with texture and remains there for very long time to come if maintained properly. Oil colors which are used when painting on canvas give that extra shine to the art creation.

One of the most noted problems in case of water color painting is the falling off and disappearance of the original color and texture after certain periods of time but this is not the case again with canvas paintings. The oil colors which are used here gets attached and affixed with the thick texture and material of the canvas and forms a strong bond which retains its originality for long time to come.

Oil colors are much more dense and thick in comparison to water colors, and thus it gives brighter and shinier effect accordingly.

Significant notes for painting on canvas

There are few things which should be kept in mind before you begin your journey towards perfection in painting on canvas.

The person who has opted for this kind of painting must be very peculiar about the type of framework and canvas, he wants to work on. There are many variances available like spline or stapled. The spline also provides the painters to paint of the fine edges and create greater impact.

The colors which are used in canvas painting are very dense and thick which are difficult to manage as well due to their low solubility in water. There are many oils which are used for the purpose but the linseed oils serves the purpose best as it mixes well with the pigments and also increases the lustre and shine of the creation.

It is generally suggested that watercolor painting is tried first and then shift to canvas painting as the hands get a firm grip and also the knowledge of light and deep strokes is gained. If this knowledge is gained then only thing that remains to be mastered is the pressure which needs to be implied while painting.
